“Nice” it ain’t…
JazzUP! Club85 Hitchin, Saturday 29th September 2018 JazzUP returns from the summer break in fine style with local musician turned national jazz star Jon Shenoy and his brilliant quartet:With a line-up steeped in tradition, Draw By Four take the classic 60s organ quartet into brand new territory where the compositions from leader Jon Shenoy (Ivo Neame Large Ensemble) mix contrapuntal bass lines and rhythmic hooks with thoughtful lyricism. Mixing stark ethereal voices with gritty Hammond boogaloo, organist Will Bartlett (Jim Mullen, Salena Jones) draws on a wide palette of sounds that build the foundation for an infectious mix of groove-based original compositions, enchanting ballads and unique arrangements of avant-pop songs. Released in March 2018 on Jellymould Jazz records, Framework is the 10-track debut album from Draw By Four, recorded hot on the heels of their UK tour of the same name. As well as showcasing formidable performances from the quartet members it also includes a suite of compositions written in response to paintings by three British painters: Winifred Knights, JMW Turner & Gill Holloway. “Dynamic and evocative adventures from soulful and skillful players – a refreshing and groovy band.” – Chris Cheek (Rudder) “Shenoy plays with great assurance, power and fluency.” – Ian Mann (thejazzmann.com) “Shenoy displays a melodic sensibility that bears comparision with any of the great saxophone balladeers of yore.” – Bebop Spoken Here “A total master of all his instruments over a bewildering array of idioms, Shenoy can hardly contain the force of his own inventiveness when he takes the microphone for his solo.” – Pete Long (MD, Ronnie Scott’s Big Band) Jon Shenoy (tenor), Will Bartlett (organ), Chris Draper (drums), Sam Dunn (guitar) Links: Draw-By-Four
Plus the return of Les Jazz Rats DJs spinning vinyl between the sets, and for the dance floor later.
